"Have you ever figured out that maybe so much of this “bad service” happens to you because of your attitude toward your server?"

NO, there are A LOT of LAZY servers out there and ones that just don't care.

I am NICE to the servers.

"your maybe you’re just a bitch."

NO, as I said before, I am VERY NICE!!

Will
"The point is; at my restaurant, we have a lot of women who order a glass of wine and sit there all NIGHT chatting it up with their girlfriends. If you dont do that then I applaud you."

I don't do that EVER!! I am not like that at all. It has NOTHING to do with the server. I don't want to sit for hours, because I feel that's boring if I am finished already. Secondly, I think of other people that are waiting for a table(if there is a wait), because if no one got up for ME, then I wouldn't be sitting, so I don't overstay my turn is what I am saying.

"I really dont understand where you get off by calling me ’selfish’. Really, lady?"

Because you expect to be paid by there customers that stay over such as in your example get one glass of wine and stay for hours. They aren't "RENTING" the table from YOU personally. If you aren't giving them "SERVICE", tell me WHY do you think you have **EARNED** MORE money? You haven't if they only order a glass of wine. You aren't getting them refills more than likely unless they order water or something else. THAT'S why I am saying you are selfish. WHAT about if there were 4 ladies taking up a booth for 3 hours and they only each order one glass wine each; seperate checks even? They don't owe you more money for **JUST SITTING**. They should honestly get their butts up, because they are truly loitering by not buying anything else and are probably keeping other people from getting seated. NO ONE OWES the server more money just because they sat a longer time than normal. If they get more service during the time, then YES, they should pay more, but not if they don't get more service is what I am saying.

"Its obvious you’ve come here solely to argue."

NO, to tell you the TRUTH, that customers don't OWE YOU MORE MONEY for you doing absolutely NOTHING. TIPS ARE FOR ******SERVICE*****, NOT FOR JUST SITTING!!! Since when are tips "rental fees?" They aren't, tips are for service.

You certainly aren't thinking of the customer's money, so WHY should they think about yours? What goes around, comes around.

"Im straying from my point here but you seem like a real bitch of a customer. "

NO, I am NICE, telling the servers "THANK YOU" when they bring me things and ask very NICELY for things.

"The needy, incesssantly bugging type that would freak out solely because her water glass was less than halfway full."

NO, if anything, I don't want water 99% of the time, so you are WAYYYY OFF BASE on that one.

As far as being needy goes, you sound LAZY to complain about work. If I ask for lots of condiments, that's YOUR JOB I AM PAYING YOU FOR unlike when someone just SITS.

"Also, you make a straw man argument by comparing your office job with my server job. Its like comparing oranges and apples."

It's the same in that we didn't get paid just to sit, you shouldn't be able to either.

"You deride others on not “caring for the customers money” and being “selfish” when you yourself are guilty of the same offense."

What offense? At least I don't think I should get paid to do absolutely NOTHING and that tables should be paid to YOU in a rental fee(which the rental fee would be to the restaurant even if they had such a thing, NOT to the server, just as they do with renting a room at a restaurant). Customers stay as long as they please. If they want to stay longer and if you don't like it, there are other jobs that you don't have to rely on the public for your income. NO ONE IS MAKING YOU WORK AS A SERVER, BUT YOU!!

You don't care about their money, so WHY should they care about yours?

"You need to realize that you arent the only person the restaurant revolves around."

I already know that, but I also know my server can go in order as much as they possibly can. I have seen a waitress at Red Lobster have 2 side salads for another couple that came in WAYYY AFTER me and my husband as well as on the SAME TRAY, our entrees we waited around 50 minutes for, guess what she did? SHE GAVE THEM THEIR SIDE SALADS FIRST. It's not as much about the seconds difference(but it is somewhat waiting that long for your food), it's the fact that she did something OUT OF ORDER to let them CUT in front of **OUR TURN**. The servers even make the salads at Red Lobster, yet, she decided to not bypass their table to deliver hot food(which we ordered first), but to deliver theirs before ours.

My point is, I expect some *RESPECT* for our time and OUR TURN when it is our turn. That's why we waited so long for our soft drinks at the fine dining restaurant, because he kept making other people's turns AHEAD OF OURS. Servers need to go in the order in which things were taken in. Let's say table 6 asked for their check first, then as you passed by, table 3 asked for a couple of refills, honestly, the table 6's check should be gotten first since they requested it first.

If table 3 would have requested their refills first and then table 6 would have asked for their check, table 3's refills should be gotten first.

Get what I am saying? I am not the only customer in the restaurant, but if I am first, DON'T PUT ME LAST, because that is SO UNFAIR and I would NEVER do that to a customer if I was serving that server, so WHY should they do that to me? They want me to tip well, then DISRESPECT when it finally is my turn, that's just wrong.

We should have gotten our entrees at Red Lobster BEFORE the couple's side salads. It's called WHO ORDERED AND WAS EVEN IN THE RESTAURANT FIRST.

I may not be the only customer(99.9% of the time), but at the same time, don't put me first if I am last and don't put me last if I am first. BE FAIR is what I am saying as much as you possibly can.

Lady,

If you are exactly the angel of the customer you make yourself out to be, you're obviously the exception to the rule, aren't you? The point is; at my restaurant, we have a lot of women who order a glass of wine and sit there all NIGHT chatting it up with their girlfriends. If you dont do that then I applaud you. You're acting as if I wrote this article solely to piss you off. But again, you are the exception to the rule. Its true, I would have gained more to have you sit down, but then again, you are an exception to the rule.

I really dont understand where you get off by calling me 'selfish'. Really, lady? I've been to your blog and read it and most of it is common sense to our wait staff. I dont really see where you get off to being a guru on restaurant tipping; especially if you dont know what its like to be a waiter. I'm making an assumption here, but I'm understanding that if half of the restaurant patrons understood what it was like to be a waiter, they wouldn't complain that much.

Its obvious you've come here solely to argue. Your whole (one) blog post is about "how to be a good server" when you've never yourself been one. And your comments are all you arguing with people (with some pretty ridiculous photos). Im straying from my point here but you seem like a real bitch of a customer. The needy, incesssantly bugging type that would freak out solely because her water glass was less than halfway full. You need to realize that you arent the only person the restaurant revolves around.

Also, you make a straw man argument by comparing your office job with my server job. Its like comparing oranges and apples. And while it is true that they might share some similarities they are vastly different from each other. I hope you're able to understand that.

You deride others on not "caring for the customers money" and being "selfish" when you yourself are guilty of the same offense. Sorry, to disappoint you and your ego, but I actually did not write this article for you.

Lady, I dont really know what restaurants you've been going to, but at mine we learn not to put in wrong orders. 'wrong side dishes, appetizers, etc.' We learn real quick and those mistakes are pretty rare? Why do we learn quick? Because if a dish is wrong, we eat the cost of it.

You fail to make a difference between a good server and a bad one. It seems that you have had terrible service at a restaurant (more than once) and have taken an undue liberty in assuming that all servers must be ungrateful, 20-year-olds living out of daddy's trust fund. Not so, madam. A "good" server truly is that: a messenger. Why? Because he would have placed the order correctly in the computer the first time. He would have triple checked the order along with any denotations the order had. (Ribeye +Green Beans -Potatoes *sauce on the side.) If the order comes out of the exposition wrong; I dont run it. Obviously. I tell them to remake it.

Isn't that what I said? Leave a small tip but tell the server what he did wrong? Obviously, if he's flippant about it, go to the manager.

"If you are unsatisfied with the service or the server in any way, you can leave a smaller tip, but notify the server nicely. This way, he can improve his service and you don’t look like you’re just a miser."

If the service was horrible, ZERO is what I leave. It's got to be horrible for me to leave that though. Leaving a smaller tip doesn't mean they will learn. It's got to be both telling the manager what went wrong AND tipping lower or nothing. If I just leave a small tip, chances are, they just assume cheap and don't even look at what they did wrong, even though they know what they did wrong chances are.
